Role Overview

We are seeking a Managing Quantity Surveyor to lead the commercial function on major projects or across multiple schemes. This is a senior leadership role within the commercial team, responsible not just for cost and contract management, but for setting strategy, managing risk, and driving performance. You'll work closely with the Commercial Director and Project Teams, overseeing Senior and Assistant Quantity Surveyors to ensure commercial success across the life cycle of projects.

Key Responsibilities

Commercial Leadership:

  • Lead commercial strategy across one or more major projects (£20m-£100m).

  • Provide commercial leadership to project teams, ensuring robust cost control, forecasting and risk management.

  • Act as a key advisor to the Project Director and Client on all contractual and commercial matters.

Cost & Contract Management:

  • Oversee preparation and agreement of valuations, variations, and final accounts.

  • Manage complex subcontract procurement and negotiation processes.

  • Ensure all contractual obligations are met and proactively manage disputes and claims.

Team Management & Mentorship:

  • Line manage and mentor a team of SQSs and AQSs.

  • Drive professional development within the team and ensure alignment with business commercial standards.

Reporting & Risk Management:

  • Produce monthly CVRs, margin analysis, and forecasts for senior leadership.

  • Monitor cash flow, identify commercial risks early and implement mitigation strategies.

  • Lead regular commercial review meetings with internal stakeholders and the client.

Requirements

Experience:

  • 15+ years of experience in quantity surveying with a significant portion at senior or management level.

  • Proven experience managing projects or portfolios valued at £20m+.

  • Background in industrial, logistics, or manufacturing schemes highly desirable.

Skills:

  • Strong leadership, communication and negotiation skills.

  • Highly analytical with commercial awareness and strategic thinking.

  • Fully conversant with JCT and NEC contracts.

Qualifications:

  • BSc in Quantity Surveying or similar.

  • MRICS or equivalent preferred.
