About the role

Balfour Beatty has an exciting opportunity for a Planning Engineer to join our growing Power Transmission & Distribution business. This role will play a key part in delivering major infrastructure projects, supporting the UK’s energy network transformation.

Location: Derby or Birmingham 
Business Unit: Power Transmission & Distribution – Utilities / DNO
Travel: Primarily supporting projects in Birmingham (HS2), with regular site travel expected.
Smart Working: We offer a flexible hybrid working model, with 2–3 days per week based in the office or on-site.

What you'll be doing



  • Ensuring that the programme content is functionally compliant with the planning
    procedures and guidance.
  • Tender: Develop and agree by collaboration a logical sequence and methodology
    ensuring that the most efficient design, procurement & construction strategy is
    adopted for the delivery of the works.
  • Produce and document planning deliverables, including programs, planning
    philosophy, presentations, and reports. Also, generate the Tender Programme and supporting information in accordance with tender requirements.
  • Contract: At the contract stage, the Planner is responsible for producing,
    managing, and maintaining the Contract Programme in accordance with planning
    procedures under the guidance of the Planning/Project Lead.
  • Displaying and evaluating the project critical path and advise the project team of
    the results and any appropriate corrective action.
  • Producing and maintaining project baselines and execute the change control
    process as appropriate.
  • Resource Management: Skilled in managing labour, equipment, and materials
    efficiently to meet project objectives while minimizing costs and delays.
  • Contract Management: Manage contracts with subcontractors and suppliers,
    monitoring performance, and resolving contract-related issues.
  • Data Analysis: Aid the planning team to produce project data and key performance indicators (KPIs) to track progress, identify deviations, and make data-driven decisions for project improvement.

Knowledge:

  • Competent in project management tools and software like Excel, MS Project,
    Primavera P6 or ASTA.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of construction, including construction methodology,
    various phases, processes, and requirements, to facilitate effective project
    planning.
  • Knowledge in project scheduling, including the ability to create, manage, and
    optimize project schedules using industry-standard tools.
  • Understanding of various forms of tender and contract documents, and
    specifications.
  • Understanding of project management methodologies.
    Experience:
  • Demonstrated experience in successfully planning and managing projects from
    initiation to completion using planning software like P6/Asta.
  • Previous experience in managing relationships with project stakeholders,
    demonstrating effective communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Experience in construction or other sectors with transferable skills that align with
    the demands of the construction field.
