Job Title: Senior Embedded Software Engineer, EV Charging (C++)

Salary: £70,000 to £80,000 + Bonus and 5% employer pension

Location: Birmingham, hybrid (two days a week on site)

You have written embedded C++ for EV chargers, AC or DC, and you know what a charger does when the real world gets hold of it. Here is a role where that knowledge is the whole point.

Why this role

A fast-growing business is building high-power DC charging for commercial vehicles. Its software already runs on live depot charging sites, and the team that owns it is small. Two engineers today. You would join as the senior voice.

Your decisions would shape the product. You would guide the two engineers, raise the standard of testing and release quality, and have room to grow into technical leadership as the team grows.

What you'll do

The core is a Windows-based control application in modern C++. It talks to power modules and charge controllers over CAN, to energy meters and insulation monitoring devices over RS485 and Modbus, and to the charging management platform over OCPP (1.6J and 2.0.1) on WebSockets, with MQTT telemetry alongside. There is some bare-metal STM32 work too.

We should be clear about one thing. Investigating faults on live chargers is a big part of the job, alongside development. A truck keeps failing to charge. You read the logs, spot the power module doing something it should not, then reproduce it with load banks and protocol emulators. Then you work with the supplier to establish whether the fault is theirs or ours. Or a charging schedule fails and you find out why.

If you like that detective work and the satisfaction of a fix that holds in the field, you will enjoy this. Customer-site travel is about once a month and usually planned. A full UK driving licence is desirable.

The work is likely to include a move from Windows to Linux and make or buy decisions on hardware and firmware, with you in the conversation.

About you

You need:

• Strong, current production experience in modern C++
• Hands-on CAN and RS485 or Modbus integration and debugging
• Testing on real equipment: scopes, CANalyzer, protocol testers, electronic loads
• Ownership from requirements through release to in-service fixes
• Good engineering habits: code review, testing, static analysis and CI

EV charging experience is what we want most. OCPP, IEC 61851 and ISO 15118 or DIN 70121 all count, and AC charger experience is very welcome.

Coming from automotive, industrial control or other energy equipment? If you have run CAN or Modbus systems and owned them in service, we would like to hear from you. MISRA, RTOS, STM32, embedded Linux (Yocto or Torizon), Windows app development and charger cybersecurity (OCPP security profiles, TLS, secure boot, signed OTA) are all a bonus, as is MCS awareness.
