Long Term Futures is seeking a confident and proactive Pastoral Mentor to join a supportive secondary school in Birmingham. This is an excellent opportunity for someone who enjoys building positive relationships with young people while playing a key role in maintaining high standards of behaviour across the school.
Working closely with Heads of Year and the wider pastoral team, you will support pupils with behaviour, engagement, and wellbeing. The role requires someone who can build trust with students while remaining firm, professional, and consistent when dealing with challenging situations.
About the Role
Working as part of the school's pastoral team, your responsibilities will include (but are not limited to):
- Supporting Heads of Year with the day-to-day pastoral needs of pupils
- Responding to behaviour incidents and removing disruptive pupils from lessons when required
- Building strong, trusting relationships with students while maintaining clear professional boundaries
- Supporting pupils to reflect on their behaviour and make more positive choices
- Managing challenging situations calmly and confidently
- Recording and reporting behaviour incidents accurately using the school's systems
- Contacting parents and carers by telephone to discuss behaviour, attendance, or pastoral concerns
- Completing administrative duties relating to behaviour, attendance, and pupil support
- Supporting pupils during periods of reflection, intervention, or time away from mainstream lessons
- Communicating effectively with teaching staff, Heads of Year, senior leaders, and families
- Following the school's safeguarding and behaviour policies at all times
Ideal Candidate Profile
- Previous experience working with secondary-aged pupils in a UK school, Alternative Provision, youth work, or similar setting is highly desirable
- Strong behaviour management skills and confidence dealing with challenging behaviour
- Excellent at building trust and rapport with young people
- Calm, resilient, and able to think on your feet
- Confident communicating professionally with parents and carers
- Comfortable completing administrative tasks and maintaining accurate records
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Able to balance a supportive approach with clear boundaries and high expectations
- Reliable, organised, and comfortable working within a busy pastoral environment
