Senior Accountant

About the Role
An established and growing independent accountancy practice based in Birmingham is looking to recruit an experienced Senior Accountant to join its dynamic team.
This is a key position within the practice, providing the successful candidate with responsibility for managing a varied portfolio of clients, overseeing the delivery of complex statutory accounts and taxation work, and supporting the ongoing development of junior team members.
Working closely with the Managers and Partners, the role will involve a combination of high-level technical accounting, client relationship management, and advisory services. The successful candidate will play an important role in maintaining exceptionally high standards of service and supporting the continued growth of the firm.
Key Responsibilities
- Managing a diverse portfolio of clients across a wide range of sectors and business structures.
- Preparing and reviewing complex statutory and year-end accounts for limited companies, partnerships, and sole traders.
- Reviewing monthly and quarterly management accounts alongside detailed financial reports.
- Preparing and reviewing complex corporation tax computations and personal tax returns.
- Overseeing the review and submission of VAT returns and managing tax compliance matters.
- Acting as a primary point of contact for clients, delivering proactive guidance and managing day-to-day relationships.
- Providing practical accounting, taxation, and general business advisory services to support client growth.
- Working collaboratively with Partners on specialized tax planning and technical advisory assignments.
- Supervising, coaching, and reviewing the work of junior accountants and trainees to ensure accuracy and continuous learning.
- Assisting with workflow management to ensure all statutory deadlines and internal target dates are met.
Requirements & Experience
- ACA, ACCA qualified or equivalent; experienced QBE (Qualified by Experience) candidates with substantial practice exposure will also be considered.
- Proven history of working within an accountancy practice in a Senior Accountant or Assistant Manager capacity.
- Strong technical capability in accounts preparation and both personal and corporate taxation.
- In-depth understanding of UK GAAP, accounting standards, and relevant tax legislation.
- Practical experience using key cloud accounting packages (e.g., Xero, QuickBooks, Sage, or Iris).
- Prior experience managing client portfolios and serving as a trusted primary contact.
- Experience reviewing accounts and tax work completed by team members.
- Ability to mentor junior staff and foster a supportive team environment.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to explain complex financial topics in plain language.
- Exceptional organizational skills with the ability to manage competing deadlines efficiently.
