Senior Test Automation Engineer

Role type: Contract

Length: 3 months initial

Location: Birmingham (Hybrid, onsite 1-2 days)

Our client is looking for an experienced Test Automation Engineer to design and build a Playwright automation framework from the ground up. You'll lead the development of scalable UI and API test solutions, embed automation into CI/CD pipelines, and help Agile teams adopt modern quality engineering practices.

Key Responsibilities:

• Design and build a Playwright automation framework using TypeScript.
• Develop maintainable UI and REST API automated test suites, reusable page objects, utilities and test libraries.
• Integrate automated testing into CI/CD pipelines and define automation standards, coding practices and quality gates.
• Partner with Developers, QA Engineers, Product Owners and Delivery teams to support shift-left testing.
• Produce clear technical documentation and mentor colleagues in automation best practice.

Essentials Skills:

• Strong commercial experience with Playwright and advanced TypeScript.
• Proven experience building test automation frameworks from scratch.
• Strong knowledge of software engineering principles, test architecture and automation design patterns.
• Experience with REST API testing, Git and CI/CD integration.
• Hands-on knowledge of Azure DevOps, GitHub Actions or Jenkins.
• Experience working in Agile delivery environments.

Desirables

Experience with Node.js, Docker, Azure or AWS, BDD, performance testing, security or accessibility testing, and coaching automation engineers would be advantageous.
