Insightful Recruitment
Optical Assistant – Domiciliary

Location: Birmingham
Salary: £12.71 per hour + monthly bonus
Hours: Full Time, 40 hours per week
Company Car Provided

Are you an Optical Assistant looking for something a little different from the traditional practice environment?

We’re recruiting for a fantastic domiciliary optical business looking for a friendly, confident and caring Optical Assistant to join their Birmingham team.

This is a varied, people-focused role where you’ll work alongside an Optometrist to provide eye care to patients predominantly within care homes across the region. You’ll also have dedicated delivery days, returning to patients to deliver and fit their new eyewear.

What does the role involve?

No two days will be exactly the same. Your week will include a mixture of:

  • Supporting an Optometrist during domiciliary clinics
  • Travelling to care homes across the region
  • Helping set up and prepare for clinics
  • Supporting patients throughout their appointment
  • Assisting with the optical and administrative side of the clinic
  • Delivering and fitting completed eyewear on dedicated delivery days
  • Building relationships with care home teams and patients
  • Providing a genuinely personal level of customer care

Most clinic days will involve visiting around one or two care homes, although this can vary depending on the schedule.

Salary & Bonus

You’ll receive £12.71 per hour on a 40-hour contract, plus the opportunity to earn a monthly performance-related bonus.

The bonus is calculated at 5% of clinic revenue above £1,300, with typical bonus earnings potentially around £400–£500 per month.

Company Car

A company car is provided as part of the package, so there is no requirement to use your own vehicle for the role.

The vehicles are unbranded and are typically similar to a Suzuki Swift or equivalent.

You must:

  • Hold a full UK driving licence
  • Be aged 21 or over for vehicle insurance purposes
  • Be confident driving a manual vehicle
  • Be comfortable travelling as part of your working day

This is a travelling role. Most journeys will be within a reasonable regional area, but Birmingham can occasionally involve journeys of two hours or more to reach a clinic. Longer journeys are planned in advance, shared on a rotational basis and are not something you would be expected to do every day.

Working Hours

Contracted hours are typically around 8:30am – 5:30pm, although domiciliary work naturally has some flexibility.

Care-home clinics generally begin around 9:45am, with many teams finishing their final clinic around 3:30pm–4:00pm before travelling back.

Some days may finish earlier, while occasionally traffic or travelling distance may mean a slightly later finish.

Do I need optical experience?

Previous optical experience would certainly be advantageous, but it isn’t essential.

We’d also love to hear from people who have worked within care homes, healthcare or other patient-focused environments and are looking for a new career direction.

What matters most is that you are:

  • Caring and patient
  • Confident communicating with elderly and potentially vulnerable patients
  • Comfortable working independently as well as alongside an Optometrist
  • Organised and reliable
  • Happy travelling throughout the working day
  • Confident behind the wheel
  • Able to adapt when plans or clinic schedules change

Full training and shadowing will be provided before you are expected to work independently.

Why consider domiciliary optics?

If you enjoy optics but want to move away from being based in the same practice every day, this offers something completely different.

You’ll be out and about, meeting different patients, working closely with an Optometrist and helping provide an essential service to people who may find it difficult to access traditional high-street eye care.

You’ll also have the security of a full-time position, company car, structured training and the opportunity to significantly increase your earnings through bonus.
