Greys Specialist Recruitment

Greys Specialist Recruitment is supporting an established multidisciplinary construction consultancy in appointing a Construction Health & Safety Advisor.

The consultancy provides construction H&S, CDM, Principal Designer, surveying, quality-control and technical advisory services to UK developers and contractors.

This is a client-facing consultancy role, managing projects across Greater Manchester and the Midlands. The portfolio currently includes approximately nine Greater Manchester projects plus wider Midlands assignments involving development infrastructure, recladding and fire-safety remediation.

The role is home-based with regular site travel, typically no more than two visits per day. Reports and administration are completed from home, with overnight stays around once or twice per month.

Practical construction H&S experience and applied knowledge of CDM 2015 are essential. Dedicated CDM Advisor or Principal Designer experience is desirable but not essential.

Key responsibilities
  • Act as the principal H&S contact for assigned clients, coordinating services across multiple projects within agreed scopes, programmes and budgets.
  • Conduct site inspections, identify unsafe conditions or arrangements and provide practical recommendations. Escalate high-risk matters before leaving site and issue reports within 24 hours.
  • Advise clients, developers, project managers, designers and contractors on construction H&S legislation and CDM duties.
  • Review Construction Phase Plans, RAMS and contractor documentation, issuing formal advice and coordinating H&S information across design and project teams.
  • Support ISO 45001-aligned systems through policies, procedures, risk assessments, templates and checklists; undertake audits and monitor actions to completion.
  • Attend or chair meetings, deliver H&S/CDM training and maintain complete electronic project records.
  • Manage deadlines and timely invoicing against an individual monthly delivery target of approximately £14,000–£16,000. Prepare fee proposals, identify out-of-scope work, secure purchase orders and support accounts with outstanding payments.
  • Attend weekly team meetings, mentor colleagues, identify additional client services, support regional growth, improve internal processes and maintain CPD.
Essential experience and qualifications
  • Recent experience as a Construction H&S Advisor, Construction Safety Consultant or similar, with practical project-delivery knowledge and experience inspecting active sites independently.
  • Strong knowledge of the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974, Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999 and CDM 2015.
  • A recognised qualification, ideally NEBOSH Construction, NEBOSH General with substantial construction experience, or equivalent, plus current IOSH membership, ideally TechIOSH or above.
  • Ability to assess Construction Phase Plans, RAMS and contractor documentation critically, supported by knowledge of construction processes, sequencing, site risks and drawings.
  • Strong client communication, influencing and report-writing skills, including handling difficult conversations professionally and producing accurate reports to tight deadlines.
  • Excellent organisation, time management and commercial awareness, with confidence using Microsoft Office, electronic reporting systems and mobile technology.
  • A full, clean UK driving licence, right to work in the UK and willingness to travel across the region and occasionally UK-wide, including one or two overnight stays per month.
Desirable experience
  • Previous work within a construction, property, CDM or multidisciplinary consultancy, particularly advising developers or clients rather than solely a Principal Contractor.
  • Experience across residential or mixed-use developments; infrastructure, groundworks, highways or utilities; and recladding, façade, high-rise or fire-safety remediation.
  • CDM Advisor or Principal Designer support experience, ISO 45001 exposure, training delivery and consultancy fee-proposal or invoicing experience.
  • NEBOSH Diploma/Level 6 or progression towards one; CertIOSH/CMIOSH or Chartered progression; a relevant built-environment qualification or professional membership such as APS, CIOB, CABE, RICS or ICE; and fire-safety qualifications or knowledge.
The person

You will be practical, proportionate and credible on active sites, able to challenge serious risks without becoming unnecessarily confrontational. You should work confidently from home, manage your diary and balance visits with reports, meetings and administration. Strong client relationships, composure, attention to detail and ambition to develop broader consultancy and CDM expertise are important.

Working arrangements

This is a home-based, minimum 40-hour-per-week position with reasonable flexibility around start and finish times, subject to client and business needs. Occasional additional hours and head-office attendance may be required for deadlines, induction, meetings or training.

Package and benefits
  • £40,000–£45,000 depending on experience.
  • £4,800 annual car allowance, with business mileage paid separately at the statutory rate.
  • 25 days’ annual leave plus bank holidays, potential birthday leave after probation and a non-contractual holiday buy-back scheme.
  • 4% employer pension contribution after three months.
  • Private medical insurance after probation, with family and dental options available through personal contribution.
  • Six-month probation and ongoing professional development within a supportive consultancy team.
