Legal Cashier Team Leader (Central Team) - Finance Team – Midlands / Hybrid
Meet the team:
Our Finance team is made up of over 70 people who work from a variety of our office locations. The work is split into three core areas; Financial Accounting, Financial Operations, and Reporting.
The team work closely with our other business operations teams to provide a first-class service. They are responsible for the sound financial management of the firms’ finances, whilst adhering at all times to the Solicitors Accounts Rules.
The role:
The role of the (Central) Legal Cashier Team Leader in Finance Operations is to ensure that their Team provide a high quality service to internal clients on the full range of Finance matters. The key aspect of the role is to supervise, coach and develop members of their Team to ensure effective, compliant delivery of all financial transactions relating to their team, in line with the Solicitors Accounts Rules (SARs.)
The day-to-day duties and responsibilities of a Legal Cashier Team leader (Central) is to ensure that the group (inc fee earners and matter partners) remain compliant with Solicitors Accounts Rules (SAR) and that is achieved by ensuring that all financial related matters are conducted accurately and timely (“without delay”) by the cashiering team members.
What you will be doing:
Supervision
- Ensure a high quality of service is provided by the Legal Cashiers in their Team and that departmental service level standards are maintained.
- Maintain time keeping, absence, overtime and holiday records and ensure that appropriate staff cover is in place during all planned and unplanned absence.
- Coach, train and develop team members so that they are proficient in the areas of processing and ensuring that the firm is compliant with SAR.
Processing
- Bank Reconciliations: Lead the team in performing daily and monthly bank reconciliations, ensuring all discrepancies are promptly investigated and resolved.
- Incoming Payment Postings: Oversee the accurate and timely posting of incoming payments, ensuring all transactions are recorded in compliance with internal policies and Solicitors Accounts Rules, that legal teams are promptly notified of ledger transactions relevant to their matters.
- Unrecognised Fund Allocation: Supervise the daily investigation and allocation of unrecognised funds, ensuring they are promptly identified and allocated to the appropriate matter, ensure the team liaise with the legal teams on investigation and resolution of unallocated funds.
- HMCTS and HMLR Invoice Imports: Manage the import and processing of invoices from HMCTS and HMLR to the correct matter ledgers, ensuring high levels of accuracy, optimising billing opportunities for recovery of disbursements, and refunds across the business.
- Residual Balance Management: In line with SAR requirements oversee the management of the group’s residual balances, ensuring they are actively monitored with proactive liaison with the legal teams on identifying, allocating and workflow actions undertaken to clear balances promptly to reduce overall balances.
- Compliance: Ensure all financial activities comply with Solicitors Accounts Rules and internal policies.
- Stakeholder Relationships: Be the SME withing the designated team, building and maintaining strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders, providing excellent customer service and support to both internal BusOps and the wider legal teams.
- Team Leadership: Lead, mentor, and develop the cashier team, fostering a collaborative and high-performance culture.
- Collaboration: Undertaking projects and any other tasks as directed by the legal cashier manager, including supporting the brand teams at busy periods, signposting queries in relation to specific brands to the relevant team, resolving issues and general queries to ensure high level of customer service.
- Systemisation: Ensuring all internal processes are efficient and in line with SARs, work closely with the Legal cashier manager to improve systemisation within their designated specialism.
What you will need:
- Proven experience in a similar role within a law firm or financial institution.
- Strong knowledge of Solicitors Accounts Rules.
- Excellent leadership and team management skills.
- Proficiency in financial software and Microsoft Office Suite.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
