Background
We are seeking to appoint a research associate to assist with research (by carrying out data collection or analyses) for a National Institute for Health Research-PHR funded study. This mixed methods study aims to evaluate the impact of school daytime restrictions on smartphone use on mental wellbeing (and associated outcomes related to physical activity, sleep, behaviour, attainment) in secondary schools. The post holder will work as part of a diverse interdisciplinary academic team and be responsible for data collection in secondary schools. The post holder will be supported to collect data using advanced techniques and will acquire key skills in qualitative and quantitative data collection, academic writing and reporting, and public engagement and impact activities.
Role Summary
Quantitative and qualitative data collection in schools with adolescents, teachers, and families
Support the management and organisation of recruitment, data and analysis
Contribute to preparing presentations, reports, and papers for publication
Main Duties
Recruit schools and participants
Collect research data; quantitative (surveys, accelerometers/activity monitor watches) and qualitative (focus group interviews)
Process and analyse research data as directed
Present research outputs, including drafting academic publications or parts thereof
Develop or adapt techniques, models and methods
Provide guidance as required to support staff and any students who may be assisting with research
Deal with problems that may affect the achievement of research objectives and deadlines
Carry out administrative tasks related directly to the delivery of the research
Promotes equality and values diversity acting as a role model and fostering an inclusive working culture
Person Specification
Degree or equivalent in relevant subject area
Experience in population health-related behavioural research and/or education research
Practical experience in conducting quantitative and/or qualitative research and analysing the resulting data
Ability to communicate information effectively to a variety of audiences, including children, parents, and professionals from other disciplines (e.g., teachers)
Ability to work as a team
Ability to organise tasks and manage time effectively
Ability to access and organise resources successfully
Knowledge of the protected characteristics of the Equality Act 2010, and how to actively ensure in day-to-day activity in own area that those with protected characteristics are treated equally and fairly
