We are seeking a commercially capable Quantity Surveyor for a contract engagement supporting the delivery of quantity surveying and commercial services.
You will manage agreed work packages, maintain accurate commercial records and work closely with project stakeholders to manage costs, payments and contractual change. This opportunity would suit an experienced QS who can work independently, take ownership of deliverables and provide clear, practical commercial advice.
Key responsibilities
• Prepare and review applications for payment, valuations and supporting substantiation.
• Monitor expenditure, commitments and cash flow, maintaining reliable forecasts and commercial reports.
• Prepare and contribute to cost value reconciliations, identifying commercial risks, opportunities and emerging cost pressures.
• Support tender enquiries, subcontract procurement, commercial comparisons and subcontract preparation.
• Manage subcontract accounts, including payment assessments, variations and final account negotiations.
• Identify, notify, price and substantiate contractual change, including NEC early warnings and compensation events where applicable.
• Support contract administration under NEC, JCT and relevant bespoke agreements, observing contractual procedures and timescales.
• Maintain clear records of instructions, correspondence, progress and commercial decisions.
• Collaborate with clients, project managers, planners and site teams to resolve commercial issues.
• Maintain confidentiality and professional standards throughout the engagement.
What we are looking for
• Relevant quantity surveying experience within a consultancy, main contractor or specialist subcontractor environment.
• Practical experience in valuations, cost reporting, forecasting, change management and subcontract administration.
• Strong working knowledge of NEC contracts and their commercial processes; JCT experience would also be valuable.
• Strong numerical, analytical and negotiation skills, with close attention to detail.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and the preparation of accurate, well-presented commercial information.
• The ability to manage competing priorities, meet agreed deadlines and communicate effectively with project stakeholders.
• A qualification in Quantity Surveying or Commercial Management, or equivalent practical experience.
Desirable experience
• Civil engineering, rail, energy, utilities, groundworks or specialist enabling works.
• Commercial involvement from procurement through to final account.
• Familiarity with systems such as CEMAR, FastDraft, Asite, COINS or Bluebeam.
• RICS or CICES membership, or progress towards professional qualification.
Engagement and working arrangements
This is a contract engagement offering £450 per day, with a five-day weekly commitment and hybrid working based in Birmingham.
The initial engagement is for a minimum of six months, with an anticipated duration of 12 months or longer. Any continuation will depend on project requirements and mutual agreement.
DMB’s policy is to undertake this engagement on an outside-IR35 basis. The contractual terms and actual working practices must support that status, with the applicable assessment completed before commencement.
