Associate Quantity Surveyor
Location: Birmingham
Salary: £68,000–£80,000
Sector: Multi-sector construction consultancy
The Opportunity
An established independent construction and property consultancy is seeking an Associate Quantity Surveyor to join its Birmingham team.
This is a traditional Associate role with hands-on project delivery at its core. You will lead cost management commissions, manage client relationships and support colleagues, remaining closely involved in the technical and commercial detail of your projects.
The opportunity would suit an established Associate or an experienced Senior Quantity Surveyor ready to step up, with the confidence to take ownership of commissions and provide clear, commercially sound advice.
The Role
You will manage projects from initial feasibility and cost planning through procurement, construction and final account, providing a consistent point of contact for clients throughout.
Key responsibilities will include:
- Leading Quantity Surveying and Cost Management commissions across a varied portfolio of property projects.
- Preparing and overseeing feasibility estimates, detailed cost plans and pre-tender estimates.
- Working with clients and design teams to develop proposals within agreed budgets.
- Advising on procurement routes, tender strategies and appropriate contractual arrangements.
- Managing tender documentation, tender analysis, negotiations and recommendations.
- Overseeing post-contract cost control, valuations, change management and financial reporting.
- Negotiating and agreeing final accounts.
- Identifying commercial risks and providing practical advice on cost, value and project decisions.
- Building strong relationships with clients, consultants and contractors.
- Reviewing the work of junior colleagues and supporting their technical and professional development.
- Managing workload, resources and fees across your commissions.
- Supporting repeat business through the quality of project delivery and client service.
About You
You will have a strong consultancy Quantity Surveying background and enjoy taking responsibility for both projects and client relationships.
You should bring:
- Experience delivering pre- and post-contract Quantity Surveying services.
- A track record of independently managing commissions and acting as a principal client contact.
- Strong technical knowledge of cost planning, procurement, tendering and contract administration.
- Experience working with JCT contracts; NEC knowledge would also be useful.
- Commercial judgement and the confidence to explain options and make recommendations.
- The ability to manage several projects while maintaining accuracy and service quality.
- Experience supporting or mentoring junior surveyors.
- A relevant degree or equivalent professional qualification, ideally supported by MRICS status.
Sector Experience
The role offers a multi-sector workload, and candidates with varied property experience are encouraged to apply.
Relevant backgrounds could include commercial offices, fit-out, residential, industrial and manufacturing, education, student accommodation, healthcare or hotels and leisure.
You do not need experience in every sector. The priority is a strong technical foundation, reliable
project delivery and the ability to adapt your advice to different clients and schemes.
What the Role Offers
- A salary of £68,000–£80,000 + Bonus
- A Birmingham-based Associate position within an independent consultancy.
- Ownership of projects and direct responsibility for client relationships.
- A varied workload across property sectors.
- The opportunity to support and develop junior colleagues while remaining hands-on with delivery.
