Senior Interior Designer

Up to £60,000 + Hybrid Working + Genuine Flexibility

Some of the best residential designers we speak to have never worked in residential.

They’ve spent years detailing back bars for hotels, resolving partition and M&E layouts for workplace fit-outs or drawing bespoke fixtures for retail. They know AutoCAD inside out. They run projects, deal with contractors and get things built properly.

What they haven’t always had is the chance to bring that to someone’s home.

Modus Careers is working with an established luxury residential interior design studio in Birmingham that is open to exactly that kind of designer.

The Studio

This is a small, close-knit and growing studio working on exceptional private homes across the Midlands and Cotswolds. Properties typically sit between £3m and £6m, with clients investing up to £1.5m in their interiors.

The work is highly bespoke and increasingly comes through reputation and recommendation. It covers whole-house schemes, extensions and refurbishments, along with bespoke kitchens, bathrooms, home bars, cinema rooms and entertaining spaces.

If you’ve designed a hotel bar or a flagship retail fit-out, much of this will feel familiar. The difference is that the client is the person who will live with the result every day.

The Opportunity

You’ll join a team of five and work closely with the studio’s founder. Over time you’ll take ownership of projects from first conversation through to completion.

That means developing concepts, presenting to clients, specifying materials and FF&E, and coordinating suppliers and contractors. It also means visiting site and making sure the finished space delivers on the original idea.

It also means opening AutoCAD and resolving how those ideas will work. Technical capability is the thing the studio needs most. You’ll produce detailed drawing packages covering:

  • Bespoke joinery
  • Electrical and lighting layouts
  • M&E coordination
  • Partitioning

You’ll then use that knowledge to run projects with confidence.

Who Is This For?

We’re deliberately keeping this open, because the right person could come from a few different directions.

An experienced Midweight Designer ready to step up. You may already be running projects day to day, but somebody above you still makes the important calls. If you’re ready to take the lead, this is a chance to do it with real support around you.

A Senior or Lead Designer from commercial projects. You have strong technical and project delivery experience and want to move into high-end residential, or back into it. You don’t need to have spent the last decade in private homes. You do need the design sensibility and attention to detail that this level of work demands, and a genuine appetite for it.

A residential designer who has stayed hands-on. If you’ve built your career in luxury residential and still enjoy both the creative and technical sides, you’ll fit straight in.

Whichever describes you, the common ground is the same:

  • Strong AutoCAD skills and the ability to produce technical information yourself, not just review it
  • Experience of running projects and dealing with clients, contractors and suppliers
  • A portfolio of delivered, high-quality work, with a clear sense of what you personally designed and drew
  • Good knowledge of materials, finishes, furniture and lighting
  • Working knowledge of SketchUp and Adobe software
  • A full driving licence for project and site visits

Joinery experience will stand out, whether that’s residential cabinetry, hospitality bars or retail fixtures.

A Different Kind Of Studio Culture

This is an ambitious studio, but not one that believes great work means sacrificing everything outside it.

Several of the team have young families, and flexibility here is practical rather than a line in a job description. Need to do the school run? That’s fine. Need to adjust your hours around something important? Have the conversation, and it gets sorted.

For the first six months, you’ll be based in the studio full time. You’ll be stepping into a small team with significant responsibility, and that time matters for building relationships with colleagues and clients. Once you’re established, hybrid working comes in alongside that wider flexibility.

Why Consider This Role?

You won’t be one designer among many, working on a small piece of somebody else’s project. And you won’t be Senior in title while every meaningful decision happens above you.

You’ll be joining a successful independent studio that wants to give you genuine responsibility and room to shape how projects are delivered. The salary goes up to £60,000 for the right person, alongside flexibility and a supportive team.

If you’re a technically strong designer who wants to move into high-end residential, or step up into a senior role, we’d like to hear from you. All conversations are handled in complete confidence.
