Brewer Morris
Finance Director
- Package: £130,000 – £150,000 + discretionary bonus + benefits
- Location: Birmingham, Leeds or Manchester
- Working pattern: Fluid hybrid working, with no fixed office days and regular travel across the business.
Brewer Morris are retained to support a high-growth, privately owned professional services business to appoint a Finance Director as it enters an exciting next phase of its development.
With revenues of approximately £30m, around 250 employees and significant growth ambitions, the business has been expanding rapidly and is now investing in the leadership, infrastructure and financial capability required to support its next stage.
This is a broad hands-on but highly commercial Finance Director position sitting on the Board and working directly with the Senior Leadership Team and shareholders. It represents an excellent opportunity for an ambitious FD who wants to help shape a scaling organisation today, while developing the capability required to operate at CFO level as the business becomes larger and more complex.
The role can be based in Birmingham, Leeds or Manchester, with a fluid hybrid working model and no prescribed number of office days. Given the seniority and visibility of the position, there will be an expectation to travel between regional offices and spend regular face-to-face time with senior leadership.
The Opportunity
The Finance Director will take ownership of the finance agenda across commercial finance, business partnering, financial control, reporting, cash and treasury, M&A, funding, systems and team development.
A major priority will be strengthening finance's partnership with operational leaders. The successful candidate will provide commercially focused insight around pricing, utilisation, project profitability, revenue, WIP, margin and working capital, helping leadership make better-informed decisions as the organisation scales.
Alongside this, you will:
- Act as a trusted financial and commercial partner to the Board, SLT and shareholders, providing clear insight, challenge and decision support.
- Lead budgeting, forecasting, management reporting, cash flow, statutory accounting, treasury and financial controls.
- Strengthen commercial decision-making around pricing, bids, contracts, project economics and profitability.
- Support an ambitious organic and acquisitive growth strategy, including investment appraisal, due diligence, funding and integration.
- Develop banking and funding relationships and support the evolution of the Group's capital structure.
- Review and improve finance systems, data and reporting, creating a more integrated and scalable finance environment.
- Lead and develop a small, lean finance team, while assessing the structure and capability needed as the organisation grows.
- Remain comfortable moving between strategic Board-level conversations and the detail required within a growing SME.
The Person
We are looking for a qualified accountant (ACA, ACCA or CIMA) with senior finance leadership experience and the commercial credibility to operate across both strategic and operational finance.
Of particular interest will be candidates coming from:
- Professional services, consultancy or other people/project-led businesses, where utilisation, pricing, WIP, recovery and project margins are important commercial drivers.
- PE-backed or investor-led environments, particularly where you have experienced rapid growth, increasing financial sophistication, acquisitions or preparation for future investment.
- Regeneration & development, renewables, transport, utilities or infrastructure-related businesses, particularly growing SMEs with project-based revenue models.
- Businesses that have experienced significant organic growth or buy-and-build activity, where finance has needed to evolve quickly to support increasing scale and complexity.
Previous exposure to M&A, due diligence, acquisition integration, debt or credit facilities and external funding would be particularly valuable, alongside experience improving finance systems and reporting. These are also identified as desirable areas within the underlying role profile.
Just as importantly, this role will suit someone who is commercial, progressive and entrepreneurial. You will need to enjoy operating in a fast-moving SME environment, building relationships with senior non-finance stakeholders and creating structure.
Why consider it?
This is not simply a replacement Finance Director appointment. It is an opportunity to join an ambitious business at a point where finance needs to develop ahead of the organisation's next stage of growth.
You will inherit an established but lean function, have genuine Board and stakeholder exposure, influence future acquisitions and funding, and play a central role in shaping the systems, team and commercial finance capability needed for a significantly larger organisation.
The organisation itself operates across transport, renewables, utilities and regeneration, supporting major infrastructure and development projects, creating an attractive combination of professional services economics and exposure to long-term investment markets.
