Role: SEN 1:1 Teaching Assistant

Your new school

I am working with a welcoming and inclusive primary school in Birmingham that is committed to providing a safe, supportive and nurturing learning environment for every pupil. The school is seeking a dedicated SEN Teaching Assistant to provide consistent 1:1 support to a child with autism.

Your new role

You will support a pre-verbal Year 2 pupil with autism on a 1:1 basis, helping them to remain safe, regulated and engaged throughout the school day. The pupil spends much of their time in a resource-based-style room but may attempt to leave the designated area and access other rooms, including the staff room and a classroom attended by their sibling. You will therefore need to be consistently vigilant, attentive and proactive while using a calm, reassuring approach.

  • Provide attentive and consistent 1:1 support for a Year 2 pupil, primarily within a resource-based-style room.
  • Use appropriate communication strategies to support a pre-verbal pupil.
  • Maintain close supervision and respond quickly if the pupil attempts to leave the learning area.
  • Support with intimate care respectfully and in line with school safeguarding procedures.
  • Use positive handling strategies when required and in accordance with school policy and training.
  • Work closely with the class teacher, SENCO and wider school team.
  • Encourage engagement, routine and positive development in a safe learning environment.

What you'll need to succeed

  • Level 2 or Level 3 Supporting teaching & learning
  • Experience supporting children with autism and complex SEN needs.
  • Confidence supporting a pre-verbal child.
  • Willingness and ability to provide intimate care.
  • Positive handling training or relevant practical experience is highly desirable.
  • Excellent vigilance, attention and awareness of safeguarding.
  • A patient, resilient and calm approach.
  • The ability to build trust while maintaining clear and consistent boundaries
