Job Description

Are you a GIS professional looking to apply your skills to one of the UK’s most significant infrastructure projects?

At Assystem UK, you’ll join a growing environmental team supporting the HS2 project, using GIS to help inform environmental decision-making across a major infrastructure programme.

This is an exciting opportunity to work with spatial and environmental data, produce high-quality mapping and analysis, and support ecological and environmental teams throughout the project lifecycle. You’ll work alongside experienced GIS professionals, ecologists and wider multidisciplinary teams, giving you the opportunity to develop your technical expertise while working on nationally significant projects.

You’ll be responsible for supporting the delivery of GIS across the HS2 project, with a particular focus on ecology and environmental applications.

Your work will include:

  • Producing high-quality environmental and ecological mapping using GIS.

  • Managing, analysing and interpreting spatial and environmental datasets.

  • Mapping habitats, ecological features, protected species records and environmental constraints.

  • Supporting ecological assessments, EIA, HRA and Biodiversity Net Gain activities.

  • Using spatial analysis to identify environmental constraints, opportunities and potential project impacts.

  • Maintaining accurate GIS datasets and ensuring mapping outputs meet project requirements.

  • Supporting the development and improvement of GIS processes, templates and standards.

  • Working closely with ecologists and wider environmental disciplines to provide spatial data and analysis.

  • Preparing maps and GIS outputs for technical reports, planning and project documentation.

  • Supporting site teams and project stakeholders with GIS and spatial information.

Qualifications

You’ll ideally have:

  • Experience using GIS software, particularly ArcGIS or QGIS.

  • Experience producing professional maps and working with spatial datasets.

  • Experience with spatial analysis, data management and visualisation.

  • A relevant degree in GIS, Geography, Environmental Science, Ecology or a related discipline.

  • An interest in applying GIS to environmental or ecological projects.

  • Strong attention to detail and an analytical approach.

  • Good communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams.

  • A proactive approach and enthusiasm for developing your technical skills.

  • Experience working with environmental or ecological data would be advantageous.

Experience with UKHab, BNG, ecological mapping, environmental constraints mapping or major infrastructure projects would be beneficial, but isn’t essential.

If you’re a GIS professional looking to develop your career within environmental consultancy and major infrastructure, this is a fantastic opportunity to apply your skills to the HS2 project while working alongside experienced technical specialists.
