The Opportunity

An established large main contractor is looking to appoint a Structural Engineer to join its team in Birmingham.

This is an excellent opportunity for a Structural Engineer looking to work within a major contracting environment, supporting the successful delivery of technically challenging construction projects across the West Midlands and wider region.

The contractor operates across a diverse portfolio of projects, including multi-storey car parks, residential developments and industrial schemes, offering excellent variety and exposure to different forms of construction.

The successful candidate will work closely with project, design and construction teams, providing structural engineering expertise from design development through to delivery on site.



Key Responsibilities

As Structural Engineer, you will:

  • Provide structural engineering input across a range of live and pre-construction projects.
  • Review structural designs, drawings, calculations and technical specifications.
  • Work closely with design managers, project managers, site teams, consultants and subcontractors.
  • Identify and resolve structural and technical issues throughout the construction process.
  • Coordinate structural elements with architectural, M&E and wider design packages.
  • Support design development and value engineering exercises.
  • Review subcontractor and specialist design information to ensure compliance with project requirements.
  • Provide technical support to site teams during construction.
  • Attend design, technical and project meetings as required.
  • Monitor structural design progress against programme requirements.
  • Assist in managing design risks and ensuring buildability is considered throughout the design process.
  • Ensure structural solutions meet relevant standards, specifications and project requirements.
  • Contribute to the successful delivery of projects in terms of quality, programme and cost.


About You

The ideal candidate will have:

  • A degree in Structural Engineering, Civil Engineering or a related discipline.
  • Previous experience working as a Structural Engineer within the construction or engineering sector.
  • Strong knowledge of structural engineering principles and construction methods.
  • Experience working on commercial, residential, industrial or multi-storey developments would be advantageous.
  • An understanding of precast concrete, structural steelwork and other common structural systems.
  • The ability to interpret and challenge structural drawings and calculations.
  • Strong communication and coordination skills.
  • A practical, solutions-focused approach to engineering and construction.
  • The ability to work effectively with both design consultants and site-based construction teams.
  • Chartered or working towards chartered status would be advantageous but is not essential.
