Structural Engineer – Buildings & Live Events
Birmingham / Coleshill | £35,000–£45,000 | Hybrid working | Paid overtime

Most structural roles focus on buildings. This one gives you a roughly 50/50 split between permanent building structures and temporary structures for live events and exhibitions.

On the buildings side, you’ll work across residential, education and commercial projects. On the events side, the work could take you to major venues, gigs and exhibitions, designing and checking structures that have to be built, used and taken down safely. Think stages, exhibition installations and unusual suspended displays, including cars. There may even be opportunities to attend some of the events you’ve worked on.

You’ll be involved from concept through to delivery, with the chance to see your designs in place on site.

What you’ll be doing

• Producing calculations and structural designs for buildings and temporary event structures.
• Working with architects, clients and other engineers to develop and coordinate designs.
• Visiting existing buildings and construction sites to carry out surveys and inspections.
• Inspecting temporary structures at event venues and signing them off on site.
• Preparing technical reports and taking a more visible role in project and design team meetings.

You’ll join an established structural team with experienced chartered engineers around you. The consultancy supports engineers working towards ICE or IStructE chartership through structured training, and there’s room to take on more project responsibility as you develop.

What you’ll need

Around three years or more of structural design experience, a Civil or Structural Engineering degree, and a good working knowledge of UK design standards, Eurocodes and Building Regulations. Experience across different materials and structural analysis software would be useful; SCIA experience is welcome but isn’t essential.

You’ll need a full UK driving licence and to be comfortable travelling to event sites, mainly across the north of the UK. This can include an overnight stay around once a month.
