We’re looking for an experienced Senior Java Developer to join a growing technology team.

This is a hands-on role focused on designing, developing, testing and improving Java-based software, working across development, testing, implementation and support to deliver reliable, maintainable solutions.

It’s also an opportunity to take the next step towards technical leadership. As your experience develops, you’ll have the chance to take greater responsibility for technical direction, software quality, mentoring and team development, with the potential to progress into an R&D Manager position within approximately 12 months, subject to performance and business requirements.

What you’ll be doing
  • Design, develop, test and maintain high-quality Java software
  • Translate technical and business requirements into practical solutions
  • Develop new functionality, integrations and product improvements
  • Apply strong software engineering and coding best practices
  • Review code and provide constructive feedback to other developers
  • Investigate defects and technical issues, identifying and resolving root causes
  • Support effective testing, including unit testing and test data
  • Produce clear technical and user documentation
  • Contribute to solution design and technical decision-making
  • Work closely with Software Testers, Implementers, Business Analysts, Project Managers and Support teams
  • Support technical discussions, knowledge sharing and mentoring
  • Help establish consistent development and quality standards
  • Contribute to the adoption of AI-assisted development and other emerging technologies where they add value
Technical environment

Java development is the key priority, but an understanding of the wider technology environment will be useful.

Experience or an interest in developing skills across the following would be beneficial:

  • AWS and cloud environments
  • DevOps
  • PostgreSQL and SQL
  • APIs and integrations
  • Infrastructure and security considerations
  • AI-assisted development and automation

You don't need to be an infrastructure specialist. The focus is on software development and understanding how your solutions operate within the wider technology environment.

About you

You’ll be an experienced commercial Java developer who enjoys staying hands-on but is also ready to take the next step towards technical leadership.

You’ll ideally have:

  • Strong commercial Java development experience
  • Experience developing and maintaining software in a commercial environment
  • A good understanding of software design, development practices and code quality
  • Experience with APIs, integrations or complex business applications
  • Strong problem-solving and debugging skills
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills
  • An interest in mentoring and supporting other developers
  • A proactive approach and a genuine desire to improve how things are done
The opportunity

This is a role for an experienced Java Developer who wants to grow with the team. You’ll remain hands-on with Java development while gradually taking on more responsibility for technical standards, solution design, mentoring and delivery.

There is a clear ambition for the successful candidate to develop towards an R&D Manager position, potentially within around 12 months, making this an excellent opportunity for an experienced developer looking for their first significant step into technical leadership.

What's on offer?
  • £50,000–£60,000 salary
  • 3% bonus, with potential for increased earning opportunity as leadership responsibilities develop
  • Fully remote working
  • Occasional travel to the South Coast
  • One international trip per year
  • 35-hour working week
  • Opportunity to progress into technical leadership and potentially an R&D Manager role
