Shift Mechanical Engineer
Location: Sandwell & West Birmingham Hospital Trust Sites
Shift Pattern: 4 on 4 off (2 days 0700 - 1900 & 2 nights 1900 - 0700)
Rate: £16 - £25 per hour
The Role
We are currently recruiting for an experienced Shift Mechanical Engineer to join a busy healthcare estates maintenance team supporting a large NHS Trust estate, including the Midland Metropolitan University Hospital and associated healthcare facilities.
This is an excellent opportunity for a skilled mechanical engineer with building services maintenance experience to work in a technically diverse environment where reliability, compliance and patient care are paramount.
Key Responsibilities
- Carry out planned preventative maintenance (PPM) and reactive maintenance on a range of mechanical systems.
- Diagnose faults and undertake repairs to mechanical plant and equipment.
- Respond to engineering breakdowns and emergency call-outs.
- Monitor and respond to Building Management System (BMS) alerts.
- Maintain heating, ventilation, pumps, compressors, boilers, water systems and associated mechanical plant.
- Support minor installation, improvement and upgrade works.
- Complete all maintenance documentation accurately and in a timely manner.
- Work collaboratively with other engineering disciplines to ensure service delivery across the estate.
- Adhere to all health and safety, infection control and site procedures.
Requirements
- Recognised Mechanical Engineering Apprenticeship or equivalent City & Guilds qualification.
- Minimum 3 years' post-apprenticeship maintenance experience.
- Strong fault-finding and repair skills across a range of mechanical building services systems, including:
- Ventilation systems
- Heating systems
- Boilers
- Pumps
- Compressors
- Hot and cold water systems
- Medical gas systems (desirable)
- Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
- Good communication and customer service skills.
- Full UK driving licence.
Desirable Experience
- Previous NHS or healthcare estates maintenance experience.
- Competent Person or Authorised Person experience.
- Knowledge of electrical systems.
