Smile Education Recruitment
SEN Primary Teacher – Special School | B34, Birmingham

Smile Education are recruiting for an experienced SEN Primary Teacher to join a welcoming and nurturing special school in B34. This is an immediate-start, full-time opportunity for an experienced and passionate teacher who is looking to make a genuine difference to the lives of children with complex and additional learning needs. There is also the opportunity for the successful candidate to secure a permanent position directly with the school, making this an excellent opportunity for someone looking for a long-term role within a specialist setting.

The school is a well-established community special school providing education for primary-aged children with severe and complex learning difficulties. The setting supports pupils with a wide range of additional needs, including speech, language and communication needs, autism, severe learning difficulties, profound and multiple learning difficulties, physical disabilities and hearing impairment.
Every pupil has an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP), and the school takes a highly individualised approach to learning. Staff work closely with families and a range of professionals to ensure that each child's educational, communication, emotional, physical and developmental needs are understood and supported.

The children benefit from:
  • Highly differentiated and personalised learning
  • Consistent routines and clear expectations
  • Individualised communication approaches
  • Sensory and practical learning opportunities
  • Support with social, emotional and communication development
  • Opportunities to develop independence and life skills
  • A nurturing and supportive classroom environment
  • Close collaboration between teachers, support staff, families and external professionals
The successful teacher will need to understand that progress in a specialist setting can look very different from a mainstream classroom. Small steps can represent significant achievements, and the ability to recognise, celebrate and build upon these moments is incredibly important. The school has high aspirations for every pupil and works to develop independence according to each child's individual starting point. Every child should have access to learning and opportunities that are appropriate to their needs.

As an SEN Primary Teacher, you will be responsible for delivering engaging, personalised learning experiences to a class of pupils with complex additional needs.
You will:
  • Plan and deliver high-quality, differentiated lessons
  • Adapt the curriculum to meet individual pupil needs and EHCP outcomes
  • Create a calm, structured and stimulating classroom environment
  • Build strong, trusting relationships with pupils
  • Work closely with experienced teaching assistants and support staff
  • Monitor, assess and record pupil progress
  • Support pupils' communication, independence and social development
  • Work collaboratively with parents, carers and external professionals
  • Contribute to EHCP reviews and individual learning plans
  • Use creative and practical approaches to engage pupils
  • Promote positive behaviour through consistent, nurturing approaches
  • Celebrate individual achievements and encourage pupils to reach their potential
  • Maintain high standards of safeguarding and professional practice
The Ideal Candidate will be experienced, resilient, nurturing and passionate about specialist education.

You will need:
  • QTS – essential
  • A minimum of 3 years' teaching experience – essential
  • Primary teaching experience
  • Experience working with children with SEN/SEND
  • A strong understanding of differentiated and personalised learning
  • Excellent classroom and behaviour management skills
  • A patient, calm and nurturing approach
  • Strong communication and teamwork skills
  • The ability to work effectively alongside support staff and multidisciplinary professionals
  • A commitment to safeguarding and children's wellbeing
  • The ability to recognise and celebrate small steps of progress
  • A genuine passion for helping children with additional needs achieve their potential
Please note: QTS is essential for this position and applications from candidates without QTS cannot be considered.
