Your new company
On behalf of Birmingham City Council, we are recruiting a Court Usher to support the delivery of the ongoing Patterson Inquests at the Birmingham and Solihull Coroner's Court. This is a unique opportunity to be part of an important and sensitive judicial process, working alongside legal professionals, coronial staff and witnesses to ensure the smooth running of court proceedings. The role offers flexibility and the chance to contribute to a significant programme of inquests expected to continue through to 2027.

Your new role
This position is available for an immediate start and can be offered on either a part-time or full-time basis, depending on candidate availability and service requirements. Working hours are generally between 8:30am and 4:30pm, Monday to Friday, with initially two to three inquest sittings per week.As a Court Usher, you will play a key role in preparing and supporting court proceedings. Responsibilities will include setting up courtrooms ahead of hearings, welcoming and assisting families, witnesses and legal representatives, and ensuring proceedings run smoothly throughout the day. You may also provide back-office support during hearings, including monitoring remote proceedings via Microsoft Teams and assisting the court team with administrative tasks and information management. For candidates seeking full-time hours, additional work may be available supporting archive administration, document scanning, reception duties and administrative functions within the legal department.Due to the nature of the Patterson Inquests, the role will involve exposure to sensitive and potentially distressing information relating to unexplained or questionable deaths. Professionalism, discretion and emotional resilience will therefore be essential.

What you'll need to succeed
To be successful in this role, you will have strong administrative and organisational skills, together with a professional and empathetic approach when dealing with members of the public. Excellent communication skills are essential, as you will regularly interact with bereaved families, witnesses, legal professionals and court personnel. You will be comfortable working in a structured environment where attention to detail, confidentiality and accuracy are critical. Previous experience within administration, customer service, legal services, courts, reception or public sector environments would be advantageous, although candidates with strong transferable skills will also be considered. You must be confident using Microsoft Office applications and online platforms such as Microsoft Teams, while remaining calm and composed when dealing with sensitive situations.

What you'll get in return
In return, you will receive a pay rate of £13.45 per hour plus holiday allowance for the first 12 weeks, before increasing to £15.03 per hour plus holiday allowance thereafter. You will have the opportunity to work within a highly respected public service environment, supporting a significant legal process that has a real impact on families and communities. This role offers flexibility around working hours, the potential for additional responsibilities for those seeking full-time work, and the chance to gain valuable experience within a court and legal setting while contributing to an important civic function.
