Due to the partnership between Hays and Birmingham City Council, we are looking to recruit a Sheltered Housing Support Officer to support residents living in sheltered housing across the city. Your new role
Birmingham City Council is seeking a compassionate, proactive and customer-focused Sheltered Housing Support Officer to join our Housing and Communities Team. This rewarding role supports older and vulnerable residents living within sheltered housing schemes, helping them maintain their independence, wellbeing and quality of life within a safe and secure environment.As a Sheltered Housing Support Officer, you will build positive relationships with residents, provide practical housing-related support, coordinate services, and work closely with colleagues, families and partner agencies to ensure residents receive the help they need. Experience of supporting residents in sheltered housing and enabling independent living is a key aspect of the role.Your main responsibilities will include:

  • Providing day-to-day support to residents living in sheltered housing schemes.
  • Carry out wellbeing checks and welfare visits to ensure residents remain safe and supported.
  • Develop support plans and assist residents in accessing appropriate services and community resources.
  • Act as a key point of contact for residents, relatives, carers and external agencies.
  • Monitor tenancy-related issues and work collaboratively with housing management teams.
  • Promote independence, dignity, choice and inclusion for all residents.
  • Identify safeguarding concerns and take appropriate action in line with Council policies and procedures.
  • Maintain accurate records, reports and case notes.
  • Organise resident meetings, wellbeing activities and community engagement initiatives.
  • Respond appropriately to emergencies and support residents during challenging situations.


What you'll need to succeed
To be successful in this role, you will need to have experience working within sheltered housing, housing support, adult social care or a similar customer-focused environment, with a genuine commitment to supporting vulnerable adults to live independently. You will be an empathetic and approachable professional with excellent communication and interpersonal skills, capable of building positive relationships with residents, families, colleagues and external partners. You will have a good understanding of safeguarding, health and safety, equality and diversity, and be confident working collaboratively with health, social care and community organisations. Strong organisational skills, the ability to manage competing priorities and experience using Microsoft Office and electronic record management systems are essential. Most importantly, you will be passionate about delivering high-quality support services that promote independence, wellbeing and dignity for older and vulnerable residents.
As this role does involve travelling across the city, you will need to have a full, clean driving licence and access to your own car (mileage expenses will be paid).

You will be paid a competitive hourly rate and have a guaranteed long-term, full-time for a minimum of 4 months, with further opportunities for permanent opportunities. As a Hays contractor, you will have a dedicated consultant who will support you throughout the recruitment process as well as whilst you are at work. You will be given access to our training platform, where you can assign yourself to free online training to enhance your own skills.
