On behalf of Birmingham City Council, we are recruiting a Trading Standards Investigator to join a highly respected regulatory and enforcement service. Birmingham City Council's Trading Standards team plays a vital role in protecting consumers, supporting legitimate businesses and investigating breaches of legislation across the city. This is an excellent opportunity to join a professional investigative team and contribute to complex and meaningful enforcement work.
Your new role
This is a full-time, six-month contract offering hybrid working, with a requirement to attend the office at least one day per week and additionally when required by the service. As a Trading Standards Investigator, you will be responsible for carrying out investigations into serious and complex offences, supporting enforcement activity and preparing cases for legal proceedings.The role will involve taking witness statements, interviewing witnesses, conducting suspect interviews under PACE, carrying out investigations and gathering evidence in accordance with legislative requirements. You will undertake searches of premises, manage exhibits and ensure continuity of evidence throughout investigations. You will be responsible for preparing comprehensive case files, liaising with legal services and partner agencies, attending meetings, and supporting prosecutions where required. The position also includes maintaining accurate records and investigation data, providing advice and guidance to consumers and businesses, representing the service professionally and attending court to give evidence when necessary. You will work independently to manage investigations while ensuring compliance with Trading Standards policies, procedures and quality management systems.
What you'll need to succeed
To be successful in this role, you will have previous investigative experience, ideally within Trading Standards, regulatory enforcement, law enforcement, compliance, environmental enforcement or a similar investigative environment. You will have experience gathering evidence, taking statements, interviewing witnesses and conducting investigations in a professional and methodical manner. Knowledge of PACE and criminal investigation procedures would be highly advantageous.You will be a confident communicator with strong report-writing skills and the ability to manage complex casework through to conclusion. Excellent organisational skills, attention to detail and the ability to handle sensitive information are essential. A willingness to travel across Birmingham and use your own vehicle for work purposes is required, with mileage reimbursed in line with council policy. Candidates must be able to obtain and maintain an Enhanced DBS Check (Adult Workforce), Hays to help sort.
