Robert Walters
NQ Construction Solicitor

Salary: £52,000-£55,000

Location: Birmingham

Experience: No prior experience in Construction required

A highly respected Legal 500 rated Construction team is seeking an NQ Solicitor to join their expanding practice in Birmingham.

This is an exceptional opportunity for you to work on a diverse portfolio of construction matters across a broad range of sectors.

You will be welcomed into a friendly, non-hierarchical environment that values individuality and supports your professional growth. With a strong commitment to social purpose and community impact, this firm provides the perfect platform for you to use your legal expertise to make a meaningful difference while advancing your career.

What you'll do:

  • Advise clients on a wide variety of construction law matters across sectors
  • Draft and negotiate high-quality construction contracts tailored to both standard industry terms (such as JCT and NEC) and bespoke client requirements.
  • Support clients in understanding complex regulatory obligations and how these interact with construction contracts within heavily regulated environments.
  • Provide accessible training and guidance to clients who may be less familiar with construction processes or contract negotiation.
  • Collaborate closely with colleagues across project teams to deliver seamless advice on overlapping areas such as procurement law and energy or waste projects.
  • Assist in major procurement exercises by advising on all related construction and contractual matters for long-term partnerships.
  • Contribute to the supervision and development of junior lawyers within the team by sharing knowledge and providing mentorship.
  • Engage in non-contentious advisory work while also having opportunities to support contentious matters when required.
  • Participate in client meetings and presentations to ensure clear communication of technical legal issues in an approachable manner.
  • Maintain consistent drafting standards while managing multiple instructions from both experienced purchasers of construction services and those new to the sector.

What you bring:

  • 6 months experience gained in a non-transactional seat during a Training Contract/period of recognised training. Prior Construction experience is desirable but by no means essential.
  • Ability to explain complex legal concepts clearly and patiently to clients who may not have prior experience with construction processes or contract negotiation.
  • Experience supporting large-scale procurement exercises would be advantageous but is not essential; willingness to develop skills in this area is welcomed.
  • Demonstrated commitment to collaborative working practices within multi-disciplinary teams focused on delivering positive outcomes for clients.
  • Interest in contributing towards the supervision and development of junior lawyers within the team environment.
  • Excellent organisational skills enabling effective management of multiple concurrent instructions from diverse client groups.
  • Strong interpersonal skills fostering trust-based relationships with both internal colleagues and external stakeholders alike.
  • Genuine enthusiasm for using legal expertise to further social purpose goals alongside commercial objectives.

What sets this company apart:

The firm's people are united by a shared vision: using their knowledge not just for commercial success but also for positive social impact.

Employees enjoy an inclusive culture where diversity is celebrated-everyone is treated equally regardless of gender identity, age, ethnicity, disability status or beliefs-and flexible working arrangements are genuinely embraced rather than simply promised.

The team's reputation for being open-minded about doing things differently means that individuality is welcomed; there's no rigid hierarchy stifling creativity or collaboration. Instead you'll discover an environment where kindness prevails-where colleagues look out for each other's wellbeing as much as they do their own careers-and where every contribution helps advance both client goals and wider societal good. If you want your next move to be about more than just billable hours-to join somewhere that truly lives its values-this could be the perfect fit.
