Assistant Head Teacher – SEND & Inclusion
Title: Assistant Head Teacher (SEND & Inclusion) Salary: LPS 9–13 Responsible to: Head Teacher Working Pattern: Full-time, 195 days + reasonable additional time
Overall Purpose
Lead and coordinate provision for pupils with SEND, EAL and wider inclusion needs. Ensure compliance with the SEND Code of Practice (2015), promote inclusive teaching, and raise attainment for vulnerable learners. Support the Headteacher in strategic leadership and whole-school improvement.
Key Responsibilities
Leadership & Strategy
- Lead the school’s SEND and Inclusion strategy in line with national and local policy.
- Act as Designated SENDCo (or work closely with the SENDCo) and ensure statutory compliance, including EHCP processes.
- Be an active member of SLT, advising on SEND, EAL and vulnerable groups.
- Contribute to the School Improvement Plan and Self-Evaluation, leading areas linked to SEND and inclusion.
- Promote the school’s ethos of Ambition, Pride and Success.
Compliance & Policy
- Ensure full compliance with the SEND Code of Practice, Equality Act and statutory duties.
- Maintain and review SEND, Inclusion, EAL and accessibility policies.
- Ensure robust identification, assessment and support processes.
- Uphold safeguarding, data protection and health & safety requirements.
Teaching & Learning
- Promote high-quality inclusive teaching across the school.
- Support staff with differentiation, scaffolding and behaviour strategies.
- Lead CPD on SEND, EAL and inclusive practice.
- Monitor interventions and evaluate impact on pupil outcomes.
- Teach across the primary age range and model outstanding practice.
Assessment & Achievement
- Analyse progress data for SEND, EAL and vulnerable groups.
- Lead pupil progress reviews and ensure provision is adapted accordingly.
- Oversee EHCP reviews, SEND support plans and intervention records.
- Ensure accurate tracking, benchmarking and target setting.
- Attend parents’ evenings and communicate pupil progress effectively.
Partnerships & Pupil Support
- Build strong relationships with parents, carers and families.
- Work with external agencies (EPs, SALT, CAMHS, outreach services).
- Ensure pupil voice informs support planning.
- Promote an inclusive, safe and supportive school culture.
- Liaise with other schools and community partners to enhance provision.
Safeguarding & Wellbeing
- Contribute to safeguarding as DSL or Deputy DSL.
- Identify barriers to learning including mental health, attendance and social care needs.
- Coordinate personalised support for vulnerable pupils and those at risk of exclusion.
Staff Development & Management
- Line manage SEND support staff including TAs and mentors.
- Coach and mentor staff in inclusive pedagogy and behaviour management.
- Lead CPD on SEND, trauma-informed practice, EAL and inclusion.
- Support performance management and staff development across the school.
Managing Resources
- Deploy staff effectively to improve outcomes for pupils.
- Monitor and review the use of resources to ensure value for money.
- Support strategic planning linked to SEND and inclusion.
Person Specification (Summary)
Essential
- QTS and strong teaching experience across primary phases.
- Experience leading SEND provision and working with external agencies.
- Strong knowledge of SEND Code of Practice, EAL needs and inclusive pedagogy.
- Ability to analyse data, lead change and inspire staff.
- Excellent communication, safeguarding knowledge and commitment to equality.
- Personal qualities: reflective, resilient, child-centred, collaborative and professional.
Desirable
- National Award for SENCo, NPQSL/NPQH or additional inclusion qualifications.
- Experience line managing staff, contributing to Ofsted, or leading whole-school initiatives.
- Experience as DSL/Deputy DSL and training in mental health or behaviour support.
