Working Hours
- 35 hours per week
- Monday – Thursday: 08:15 – 16:15
- Friday: 08:15 – 14:45
Location
- This is a full-time, site-based role at our Birmingham facility.
- We are currently located in the Jewellery Quarter, but the workplace will be relocating to Longbridge in the Summer 2026. You must be able to reliably commute to this location after the move.
- Please note the Jewellery Quarter office site is located within a clean air zone.
Role Description
The Laboratory Chemist will provide analytical and production support across all aspects of surface finishing operations. You will ensure reliable and accurate sample analysis, and provide effective technical assistance to production activities. The role supports Metalor customers and sites through technical problem and process support, contributing to the development of new business opportunities. The position may work with other Technical Service teams to ensure consistent delivery of technical expertise and operational support.
The duties & responsibilities of the Laboratory Chemist, include:
Small order processing
- Manufacture of solutions and chemicals to meet small or urgent larger orders from customers.
- Repacking of products to smaller packs to meet customer requirements.
- Relifing of products from stock.
Technical
- To process customer samples by carrying out solution analysis, plating tests, trouble shooting and reporting the results to the customer.
- To carry out necessary tests to resolve problems that customers have reported.
- To carry out X-ray fluorescence analysis on customer samples ( for thickness and assay ), and refining samples for assay.
- Plating of samples for customer evaluation.
- To carry out laboratory investigations and developments of products to meet particular customer requirements.
- Attend customer sites as required for installation of electroplating baths.
Administrative tasks
- Ordering of chemicals, packaging and equipment after evaluation of suppliers for quality, delivery and cost.
- Supplying Technical and Safety datasheets to customers.
- Carry out laboratory inventory and assist with chemical stock inventories.
Quality/ Health & Safety/ Environmental
- To ensure all company quality policies and procedures are followed so as to ensure that the agreed requirements of the customer are met.
- To ensure that all company statutory health, safety and environmental policies are followed as to ensure a safe working environment
- Maintaining good housekeeping throughout the work environment.
This job has no supervisory responsibilities, but involves a lot of self motivation and working with minimal supervision.
Professional Experience
- Experience in analytical techniques is required.
- Experience in analysis and/or electroplating is desired.
- The expected requirement to be a minimum 2 years’ experience in an analytical laboratory environment.
Education
- HNC chemistry or MChem is preferred
Language Skills
- English
- Ability to write routine reports & correspondence and communicate with customers by phone and email.
PC Skills
- PC literate with ability to use SAP, Microsoft office including Excel, Word and Powerpoint.
