The Medical Patient Intervention Unit (MPIU) will be a new 14-bed acute care hospitalist unit scheduled to open later this year at the UAB Center for Psychiatric Medicine. This new unit will provide care for patients suffering from a psychiatric disorder with a concurrent medical condition that requires additional treatment. Nurses will work as part of an interdisciplinary team to care for: psychiatric patients with varying medical conditions, including uncontrolled diabetes, heart failure, and acute kidney injury; patients suffering from the effects of coexisting severe mental illnesses, including acute psychosis or encephalopathy and toxic ingestions; and, patients with degenerative diseases like Huntington's disease or a traumatic brain injury.

Job Description
To work with nursing leadership to direct nursing service activities in the assigned care unit for the duration of one shift and/or in the absence of the Nurse Manager. To provide professional nursing care for patients in assigned care unit. To support nursing leadership in the coordination of patient care, personnel management, physician/interdisciplinary collaboration and general administrative duties.
Qualifications
Associate's degree in Nursing and two (2) years of related experience required. Work experience may NOT substitute for education requirement. If job is in a free-standing emergency department (FSED) location, one (1) year of experience required must be emergency or ICU nursing experience. Currently licensed or eligible to be licensed as a Registered Nurse (RN) by the Alabama Board of Nursing required. Certified in Basic Life Support (BLS) from the American Heart Association (AHA) is required or should be obtained within thirty (30) days of employment. Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification from the AHA is required within six (six (6)) months from date of hire to role. Depending on the unit/department, Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification from the AHA, or other comparable certification as appropriate for the age of patients to be treated, may be required within six (six (6)) months from date of hire to role.
