Power Up Your Career – Join the Team Behind the Great Grid Upgrade
Do you have experience in Power Transmission or National Grid projects?
Are you passionate about exemplary Design Management?
Do you want to help shape one of the biggest, most iconic infrastructure programmes in the UK?
Then we want to hear from you.
Laing O'Rourke is recruiting Design Managers and Senior Design Managers from Civils & Geo or Electrical Engineering backgrounds to support major power infrastructure works as part of National Grid's Great Grid Upgrade – a once-in-a-generation initiative to rewire the nation and accelerate the UK's transition to net zero.
Our current opportunities are based across England and Wales, with key locations including project sites in Hertfordshire and hub offices in Birmingham and Dartford.
The Opportunity
You'll lead the design delivery of a major power infrastructure project – playing a pivotal role from early-stage planning through to delivery. Working with client teams, technical experts, in-house design leads, and project delivery colleagues, you will help deliver design solutions that are robust, innovative and assured.
This is a chance to work at the heart of the UK's low-carbon energy future – on a programme that spans substations, overhead lines, and new grid connections.
What You'll Be Doing
Experience managing design from concept to completion
A degree in Civils, Electrical Engineering, Building Services, or related discipline
Power Transmission or Infrastructure sector expertise – or transferable skills from complex engineering projects
A problem-solving mindset and a commitment to high-quality delivery
Don't meet every requirement? If you're passionate about energy infrastructure and design excellence, and have relevant experience, we'd love to hear from you.
Why Laing O'Rourke?
As a delivery partner on the Great Grid Upgrade, we're helping to modernise the UK's energy system for a sustainable future. With over 150 years of experience, we bring certainty, ambition and technical excellence to every project we deliver.
You'll be joining a team where innovation, collaboration and impact come together.

As a Disability Confident employer, we welcome candidates with long-term health conditions or disabilities. If you meet the essential criteria, we will offer an interview through our ‘Offer an Interview' scheme. If you need adjustments or an alternative format, please contact: [email protected]
