You are invited to apply for a post as a practitioner psychologist with the National Deaf Mental Health Service. The post-holder will work as an integrated member of the MDT, providing specialist psychological assessment and intervention across in-patient and out-patient settings. The post-holder will also be involved in service development initiatives, with opportunities for teaching and training across the region.


Within the MDT, you will join a friendly and supportive psychology team that offers excellent opportunities for research, personal development and special interests. As a national specialist service, we support networking, exchange of good practice and peer support amongst psychologists and other professionals across the country. The post-holder will work closely with the Consultant Clinical Psychologist. We have good links with local universities and are keen to encourage research.


BSMHT is a large and well-established provider of adult and older adult mental health services, offering comprehensive local provision to the culturally and socially diverse population of Birmingham and Solihull and a portfolio of specialist regional mental health services to communities across the West Midlands and beyond.

Main duties of the job

  1. Provide culturally affirming, evidence based psychological input for deaf clients, their families and other carers, undertaking highly specialist psychological assessments and providing adapted individual and group based psychological therapy and intervention, appropriate to individual needs.

  2. Support the dissemination of effective evidence informed psychological practice within the service by developing psychologically informed protocols, guidelines and procedures that can be incorporated into routine team/ward practice.

  3. Plan, organise and provide teaching/training session/programmes in psychological principles and practice for other members of the MDT and professionals in outside agencies.

  4. Provide supervision and 'liaison-consultation' services to enable and support client related work undertaken by other members of the MDT and other services working with our clients across the region.

  5. Manage, supervise and support the clinical work of trainee clinical psychologists, assistant psychologists and other associated graduate psychologist roles attached to the psychology service as appropriate.

  6. Exercise responsibility for the systematic governance of psychological practice within the team, undertaking governance, audit and clinical administrative activities, writing and presenting reports and undertaking project development and implementation as appropriate.

Person Specification
Experience

  • Experience of working with deaf people with mental health difficulties

  • Awareness of deaf culture and language


Qualifications

  • Qualified status as a practitioner psychologist

  • Additional qualification in one or more psychotherapeutic interventions


Skills

  • Ability to adapt psychological intervention for different client groups

  • Ability to adapt communication style according to needs of the situation
