Karis Medical Center are delighted to announce that we have a position to join our expanding team as a Band 2 Health Care Assistant. Previous experience in General Practice is desirable but not essential. Must have experience in Phlebotomy.

Expected hours: 20-30 per week


Main Duties of the Job

To support the practice nursing team in the delivery of nursing services, working as part of the practice multidisciplinary team, delivering care within their scope of practice to the entitled patient population. The healthcare assistant will deliver and assist clinical staff in the provision of treatment, preventative care, health promotion, and patient education.



  • Delivering a phlebotomy service, including home visits where required

  • Blood pressure recording and equipment fitting for 24-hour machines

  • Measuring weight and height (BMI) and offering lifestyle advice where appropriate

  • Collection of urine specimens

  • Assisting with chronic disease management clinics working alongside our registered nurses.

  • Injections (Vitamin B12 injections, Influenza and Pneumonia vaccinations in accordance with protocols)

  • Chaperoning and assisting patients where appropriate who are being examined or treated by another clinician

  • Maintaining and cleaning equipment used by the nursing team

  • Fridge monitoring, maintaining cold chain and adhering to policy.

  • Assist in Health Promotion activities and promoting patient awareness.

  • Participation in administrative systems in the Practice

  • At all times there will be a need to maintain accurate records

  • Attend and participate in Practice meetings

  • Have a sound knowledge of the Practice's infection control policy

Job Responsibilities

The following are the core responsibilities of the healthcare assistant. There may be on occasion, a requirement to carry out other tasks; this will depend upon factors such as workload and staffing levels:



  • Undertake new patient health checks

  • Support the practice nurse with health promotion programmes

  • Carry out baseline observations such as pulse oximetry, blood pressure, temperature, pulse rate, recording findings accurately

  • Support the practice nurse with the management of chronic disease clinics

  • Carry out BMI checks as directed

  • Act as a chaperone as required

  • Venepuncture

  • Ensure specimens are recorded and ready for onward transportation

  • Vaccine/cold chain storage, monitoring and recording

  • Ensure all clinical rooms are adequately stocked and prepared for each session

  • Ensure fridges are cleaned routinely in accordance with extant guidance

  • Deliver opportunistic health promotion where appropriate

Qualifications

  • Venepuncture

  • Ability to record accurate clinical notes

  • Experience of working in a healthcare setting

  • Experience of working with the general public

  • Healthcare qualification (level 3) or working towards gaining equivalent level

  • Experience of working in a primary care environment

  • New patient medicals including Height, weight, BP, Pulse

  • Chaperone procedure

  • Wound Care / Removal of sutures & staples

  • ECGs
