Band 8a Highly Specialist Neuro / Stroke Speech and Language Therapist -- Permanent post (30 hrs a week):

This post involves provision of highly specialist Speech and Language Therapy at expert practitioner level and having operational and strategic responsibility within the field of acute neuro/stroke.
University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Trust is a large organisation, based in the vibrant city of Birmingham, now covering four busy hospital sites and a community service. Due to some internal reconfiguration, we have an exciting new opportunity at Heartlands, Good Hope and Solihull Hospitals (HGS) part of University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust to appoint a Band 8a Clinical Speech & Language Therapists to join our dynamic Speech & Language Therapy team.
Main duties of the job
The successful candidate would lead the Speech and Language Therapy service at HGS across our ASU, Neuro and ESD teams acting at an expert practitioner level providing clinical input within an acute neuro/stroke caseload and working closely with the MDT with reference to maintaining safety and the quality of care for patients.
You would be supporting the Clinical Team Lead and Professional lead by co-ordinating the team of speech and language therapists and supporting staff in delivering a clinically prioritised and safe service. The candidate would be actively engaged in the service delivery including business continuity, service planning, clinical governance and service innovation.
The SLT department at HGS are committed to ensuring staff feel supported with their career progression through supervision, appraisal, in-house and external training, and leadership development. This post includes participation in the 7 day service for inpatients across Heartlands Good Hope and Solihull Hospitals.

Person Specification
Qualifications
- *Speech and Language Therapy Degree Qualification or equivalent
- *Health Professions Council -- Licence to Practice
- *Registered Member of Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists
- *Evidence of commitment to advanced clinical and non-clinical continued professional development within own speciality, e.g. post registration training, management competencies and evidence of a detailed personal development portfolio (E).
- *Relevant accredited postgraduate education/ courses in Stroke
- *Leadership training
- *Postgraduate advanced accredited dysphagia training
Experience
- *Relevant postgraduate experience in key specialist area's relevant to the post
- *Extensive experience of management of adults with complex swallowing / communication needs
- *Significant experience as a clinical leader including direct clinical supervision of staff
- *Teaching experience to multi-professional groups with evidence of ability to deliver high quality presentations
- *Experience of leading audit
- *Evidence of working effectively in partnership with others within multi-disciplinary teams and across agencies
- *Ability to constructively challenge current practice and identify opportunity to develop, implement and facilitate change in practice by others
- *Able to interpret and analyse a range of policy, clinical guidelines and data and their relevance for practice. The service responds to national initiatives and policy within the framework of clinical governance including clinical effectiveness, evidence based healthcare, managing clinical risk and development issues, and that there is evaluation against national benchmarks where appropriate
- *Good understanding of IT systems and its application to clinical practice
- *Experience of involvement in VF / FEES clinic
- *Good understanding of principles of data and experience of their use in evaluation of service delivery
- *Knowledge and understanding of the research process
- *Good knowledge and application of all areas of Clinical Governance including Quality, Audit and Risk management
- *Ability to comprehend and work within the Trust's policies of data protection, equal opportunities and Health and Safety to meet the differing needs of patients
- *Understands the legal responsibilities of the profession
